Tasting Review- New Zealand Sauvignon Gris
"I am rare, and there is value in all rarity; therefore I am valuable."-Og Mandino
Wine grapes or it is known as Vitis Vinifera constantly surprises us with either ancient unknown varietals which are native to a certain ancient countries or even a new invention through scientific breakthrough!
Well this time around, we are going to discover something new which is actually one of the unknown native grape of France and this particular grape was under threat from extinction due to the phylloxera crisis which is an unfortunate event happens during the mid 1860s..
The pest which is known as phylloxera was actually being transported via the grape vines from the New World and once it was brought back to France then it totally destroyed the grape vines by causing it to rot away and die a painful and slow death that rock the whole european wine producing regions..
It's actually a pink berried mutation of the Sauvignon Blanc that was originated from Bordeaux but it slowly found itself to be living in Chile, Uruguay, New Zealand, USA & Switzerland!
Sauvignon Gris is actually a cousin of the Sauvignon Blanc which has a superior ripeness that gives this wine a roundess and intensity of fruit with a more tropical dominance..
It is a less aromatic varietal with capability to be a very good and complementary blending partner in wines of Loire Valley.. The wines made from this varietal are said to be richer, more body and heavier in texture than it's cousin alongside with ripe and juicy tropical and citrus fruit notes.. It tends to lean towards the drier end of the spectrum in terms of sweetness accompanied by herbaceous notes that resembles the Sauvignon Blanc..

Tasting notes:
Aroma:
Grassy notes, green apples, green stonefruits, kiwi, gooseberries, capsicums, asparagus
Palate:
On the palate, the wine has a dry sensation in terms of sweetness and it falls on the medium to full bodied with a slight rich and luscious mouthfeel and the fruit aromas was amplified on the palate especially on the gooseberries, green apples, herbaceous notes, salty breeze, asparagus, and green capscium..
Despite it having a rich texture and mouthfeel on the palate, it does have a mouthwatering medium plus acidity that lingers for quite a long time that gives this wine the impression of being a lively and refreshing wine to drink!
